Position Purpose:

The Portfolio Manager: Education will be responsible for developing, directing, and managing an impact-driven and

measurable education development in line with the Transnet Foundation strategy through programmes that contributes

towards sustainable socio-economic development. The portfolio will focus on responding to systemic education challenges

with a particular focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects starting from early childhood

education through to matric. This response will include in-school programmes, after-school programmes, teacher

development, and placement of early childhood development programmes in communities without access and the training of

practitioners.

Position outputs:

  • The portfolio manager will ensure effective project planning for projects focused on the following:
  • Improving subject performance for learners in local schools – specific to STEM subjects and English (inclusive of reading
and literacy focus)

  • Creating a pipeline of competent learners entering Grade 1 through Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes
  • Use of dormant Transnet Properties to establish ECD
  • Budget planning, allocation, and monitoring of the portfolio performance in liaison with the Finance Manager
  • Manage the reporting process through the collection of monitoring and evaluation data with the portfolio team
  • Manage reporting timelines in line with Transnet Foundation Annual Reports and responding to annual internal and external
audit requirements
  • Develop strategies to place the Foundation education programmes on a national scale
  • Build communities of practice to strengthen Transnet Foundation position as a key player in the education space
  • Establish value adding and sustainable partnerships to leverage resources with government departments, reputable
non-profit organisations, community-based organisations, donors, and corporate partners
  • Drive and implement strategic and operational plans for the Transnet Foundation Education portfolio including programmes
focused on STEM and Early Childhood Education
  • Draft, negotiate, and monitor the implementation of contracts for the portfolio
  • Implement effective control systems for education initiatives to ensure compliance with corporate governance and risk
management
  • Build and develop relationships with relevant education stakeholders and institutions to sustain working relationships and
partnerships towards driving programme outcomes
  • Build impact measurement systems specific to the education portfolio and manage monitoring and evaluation to ensure
monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting of project progress
  • Manage portfolio team and ensure implementation of projects with the support of the Project Manager and Project
Administrator
  • Structure functional management of all ongoing projects
  • Internal stakeholder engagement focused on Operating Divisions and monitoring their community needs related to the
education portfolio
  • Ensure effective reporting of project impact across the portfolio – integral to supporting the overall Transnet Foundation
report and part of the deliverables of this role will include the
  • Leading of the project implementation team to contribute to the final annual Foundation Report

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences
  • 8 – 10 years’ experience in CSI environment
  • At least 5 years management experience
